New Cashew varieties with high yield and quality

The Cashew Research and Development Center (Cashew Center) under the Southern Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (IAS) has selected, successfully developed and provided for production 3 new varieties of cashew: PN1; AB29 and AB05-08. These are high-yielding and high-quality cashew varieties that are resistant to adverse weather (climate change) with the aim of improving yield, quality, output and income for cashew farmers. , meeting the export target of Vietnam’s cashew industry.

The PN1 cashew variety was recognized as a trial production variety in Decision No. 3492 QD/BNN-KHCN, dated 9/9/1999. Currently, the Cashew Center has completed the scientific dossier and submitted it to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for official recognition of PN1 cashew varieties and recognition of trial production for two varieties of cashew AB29 and AB05-08.

Same thing PN1. Young leaves purple, old leaves dark green, yellow when ripe; young seeds purple, when ripe gray white, thin shell; seed yield: 2,500-3,000 kg/ha, grain size 160 – 180 seeds/kg; multiplication rate reaches 26  – 28%. The variety PN1 has wide adaptability in the Southeast provinces.

Similar to AB 29. The young leaves are light green, the leaf blade is large and oval; young green fruit, yellow when ripe; young green seeds, gray-white when ripe, thin skin, strong branching; thick and even canopy; flowering not every other year; 10-15 fruits/bundle; seed yield from 3,500-4,500 kg/ha; multiplication rate from 30%-32%; grain size: 140-150 seeds/kg; strong shoot growth, obtained many grafted shoots with high asexual propagation ability.

Similar to AB05- 08. Young green leaves, large leaf blades oval and slightly twisted, dark green; young fruit green,  when ripe red; young green seeds, gray-green when ripe, thin shell; low stem, strong branching. The canopy is thick, the fruits are grouped in clusters of 10-15 fruits; seed yield: 3,000-4,000 kg/ha; multiplier ratio: 29% – 32% ; grain size: 140-150 seeds/kg.
+ Disadvantages: weak buds due to prolonged flowering time. (very few grafted eyes for grafting production).

From the results of research and breeding and technical process of cashew cultivation, the Cashew Center has supported farmers in the provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc and Ba Ria – Vung Tau to demonstrate new varieties with high yield and promise. such as PN1, AB29 and AB05-08. The results were recorded in 8 farmer households, the lowest yield was 1.4 tons/ha and the highest was 5 tons/ha.

Notes:   a) Real cashew varieties (seeded); b) Same as introduced by IAS;

When planting things, people need to pay attention

The thing is that it takes 1 year for a perennial plant to grow, 2 years for pruning to create a canopy (3 years for the basic construction period) and 20 years of exploitation, even up to 50 years. In order to have cashew orchards with high yield and quality, the identification of cashew varieties is extremely important. Currently, in production, there are many facilities producing poor quality cashew nuts, varieties of unknown origin. Therefore, farmers when buying seeds need to contact the units that have been assigned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to produce and supply cashew seeds.
